Rugofarm Impact
Beyond
the Bottle
Fair For Life certified, Impact you can trace
Every batch of oil we produce carries an impact that goes far beyond the bottle.
Here's what that looks like, in numbers and in practice — from the households who grow the crop to the standards that govern how we work.

Economic
Stable, fair income for smallholder farmers — turning underused land beneath banana trees into a reliable second harvest, and a route out of poverty for rural households.
Social
Fair wages, safe working conditions, and long-term partnerships — not just with producers, but with the cooperatives and communities that sustain them.
Environmental
Patchouli is grown alongside existing banana crops, not in place of them — requiring no new deforestation and making productive use of land already under cultivation.
Certification isn't self-declared.
It's independently verified.
Fair For Life is an internationally recognized fair trade standard, independently audited by Ecocert. Certification requires ongoing verification against strict criteria:
- Fair prices
- Respectful, safe and dignified working conditions
- Supporting the autonomy of vulnerable communities
- An environmentally responsible approach
- Strengthening local social capital

Proof, not promise
Every kilogram of oil we export can be traced back to the specific zone — and the specific cooperative — that grew it.
This isn't just a supply chain feature. It's what makes accountability possible: knowing exactly where impact is happening, and where it still needs to grow.
The next milestone: organic certification and digitalization of our tracking system
Our next milestone is organic certification, paired with the digitalization of our tracking systems — bringing even greater transparency from field to bottle, and giving buyers real-time visibility into the supply chain behind their oil.

Behind every drop, a story of transformation

Magnus
One of our largest patchouli leaf producers in Rubirizi, Magnus once saw the space beneath his banana trees go unused — no crop could thrive in that shade. Patchouli changed that. Today, with his sons now involved in the plantations, he sums up the impact simply:
“Now I harvest bananas up top and patchouli below. Our patchouli is a debt eraser.”
